Vérité cinema in its purest form, GUNDA chronicles the unfiltered lives of a mother pig named Gunda, a flock of chickens, and a herd of cows with rare intimacy. Using stark, black and white cinematography and the farm’s ambient soundtrack, Russian director Victor Kossakowsky (Aquarela) invites the audience to slow down and experience life as his subjects do, patiently taking in their world. Kossakowsky discovered his subject in the Norwegian countryside on his very first day of research. He recounts how he opened the door to the pigsty and Gunda came towards him. He told his producer, “We have found our Meryl Streep.” For filming, the director built an exact copy of the pigsty with removal panels in order to capture a full 360 degrees without having his crew be physically in the hut themselves. Only the camera lens was inside, so as not to disturb the pigs. Gunda asks us to meditate on the mystery of animal consciousness, and reckon with the role humanity plays in it. Executive produced by Joaquin Phoenix.
